During summer 2013, the Winooski Middle/High School English Department created an online writing guide to support teaching and learning of written communication for grades 6-12. By linking existing writing rubrics to definitions, models, and other resources, this project helps students and teachers learn and assess Effective Oral and Written Communication, one of Winooski’s new Graduate Expectations.
Middle school teacher Chris Magistrale along with high school teachers Christina Lauterbach and Brent Litterer designed the guide to support use of the school-wide writing rubric. Through hyperlinks, the new online guide connects all of the criteria on the rubric to definitions and annotated examples at each level of proficiency. This kind of interactive technology is a promising new tool for personalized learning.
