New Youth Leadership and Engagement Fellow Alert!

Hello educators, colleagues, students, activists, and lifelong leaners!

My name is Will Andrews and I will be the Youth Leadership and Engagement fellow for the 2013-2014 school year and I couldn’t be more excited!  I come from the Winooski School District where I have worked for over nine years.  I have subbed in every classroom in the building, worked as an instructional assistant in many capacities, taught in an alternative middle school program, and worked in the mainstream Middle School as a Social Studies and Science teacher.  Next year I will be splitting my time between the partnership and the creation of Winooski’s first personalized and proficiency based classroom called the iLab.

Throughout my years of teaching my main focus as an educator has been on student leadership and engagement.  If I can get my students excited about what they are learning, as well as how they are learning, my job becomes easy, my students work hard, and the world turns perfectly on its axis.  To get my students engaged I follow the latest educational research in student engagement, dive in and incorporate new educational technology (iPads, Badgestack, EDU2.0, etc…), put students in charge of their learning, and tie it all in with some good old-fashioned humor.  If my students care about how they are learning and feel like they have a say in the learning process, I feel like I have done my job as a teacher.

Usually at this point in the summer the word “education” isn’t in my vocabulary, but this summer I can’t seem to get it out!  I am looking forward to beginning my work as a fellow and I can’t wait to get started!

Enjoy the weather and be well!

Will Andrews
